The Mayo Association World Convention from the April 29 to May 1 taking place in Erris offers something for everyone. Mayo Association Dublin invites people to meet the Canadian Ambassador, His Excellency, Kevin Vickers at the dinner on the Friday evening. Olympic silver medallist Kenneth Egan will be one of the sports stars and managers lining out to speak on Achieving Success in Sport – What does it take? a free, public seminar taking place in Westport Town Hall on Wednesday, November 11 starting at 7:30 pm. Kenneth, or Kenny, will be joined by James Horan, former Mayo Senior Football Manager, Valerie Mulcahy, one of the country’s most decorated sportswomen having claimed nine All-Ireland titles with the Cork Ladies Football side and Tom Mohan current manager of the FAI U17 national team. A member of the Connacht Rugby Team is also expected to join the panel but his name has not been confirmed at time of going to print.

Mayo are on the look out for a new senior football manager after the inevitable resigning of joint managers Pat Holmes and Noel Connelly last Friday night. It was a somewhat embarrassing saga in the Mayo GAA family that such an event occurred. By the time Noel and Pat resigned I had simply had enough. I was so drained from talking about it and anxiously waiting for any developments that I was relieved there was closure.

Breaking something is easy. Fixing it requires much more skill and patience, and coming up with a better plan is not always as easy as saying the current one is flawed and not working.

I hope the recent scandals in the Catholic Church will not discourage the noble tradition of the cleric as the social champion of the people. It is time that we had their like to nail their colours to the mast once again. Growing up in the last century, I was familiar with such names as Fr James McDyer and his tireless campaign against the official neglect of Gleann Cholm Cile; and Canon George Quinn and his fight for better social housing. There were several others, who have spilled over into recent years, including Fr Peter McVerry and his fight for homeless people in Dublin, and Fr Harry Bohan and his belief in the staying power of families in rural Ireland. But the champion of them all, the priest with the soft voice and a twinkle in both eyes, was the indefatigable Monsignor James Horan. Not only did he re-design the village of Knock to make it more people friendly, he built schools, clinics, and a convent, and a vast basilica. He organised community water schemes, and forestry plantations, and built an impressive international airport in the bogs of Mayo. 

"What we do need to concentrate on is being at our very best in June, July, August, and September, and whatever we have to do to be in the best shape we can be, that's what we have to concentrate on," said Noel Connelly on a wet and cold evening last November when he and Pat Holmes sat down to meet the local press for the first time after their appointment as the new Mayo senior management ticket. This coming Sunday is last Sunday in August, and things have gone exactly to that plan so far. If they are to keep going until September then the next step is to get over Dublin on Sunday.
